Windows define the character of a building’s facade, but aligning plan views with elevation views can be tricky. Drawing mullions and frames from scratch often results in messy, unaligned drawings. Additionally, placing a window block usually requires manually trimming the wall lines underneath, which is destructive and time-consuming if the window moves.
To maintain a flexible workflow, professional drafters use intelligent blocks that mask the geometry below them. This allows you to move a window along a wall without having to “heal” the lines you previously trimmed. Mastering this technique is essential for creating clean construction documents.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Window Blocks
Precision is key for fenestration. Follow these tips:
- The Wipeout Command: Build a Wipeout frame inside your window block to “mask” the wall lines underneath. Ensure wipeout frames are set to “Frames Off” so the outline is invisible, but the masking effect remains.
- Attribute Data: Add invisible attributes for “Sill Height” and “Head Height”. Having this data embedded allows you to extract window schedules automatically later.
For deeper technical documentation on using the Wipeout command, check the official Autodesk Knowledge Network.
