Designing a parking lot, garage, or driveway isn’t just about drawing rectangles. You need precise vehicle dimensions to ensure functionality. A common error is using a generic car block that is too small, leading to parking spaces that are technically compliant on paper but unusable in reality. Driveways must also account for the “swept path” or turning radius.
Using accurate, to-scale vehicle blocks allows architects to “crash test” their designs. Whether designing a residential garage or a commercial loading dock, having a library of standard design vehicles (Sedans, SUVs, Trucks) is essential for validating logistics.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Vehicle Blocks
Site planning is governed by strict dimensions. Use your blocks to verify compliance:
- Design Vehicle Standards: Ensure your car blocks represent the “Standard Design Vehicle” for your region. A typical length to check is approx. 19ft (5.8m). If your block is smaller, scale it up to match the standard.
- Turning Radius Checks: Group your car block with a circle representing its minimum turning radius (usually ~24ft or 7.3m). Move this group through your layout to visually check for collisions with walls or curbs.
For detailed technical data on vehicle dimensions, refer to the Wikipedia entry on Design Vehicles.

Site plans require more context. Add:
- Garage Blocks (C13) for residential parking.
- Landscape Blocks (D5) for parking lots.
