Doors are arguably the most frequently used block in any architectural floor plan, yet they are often the source of significant drafting frustration. A common issue architects face is the constant need to modify door swings. Whether a door needs to swing 90 degrees vs. 180 degrees, or flip from left-hand to right-hand, manually redrawing static blocks breaks the workflow.
Furthermore, managing the visual weight of doors is critical. If the door panel and the swing arc are drawn with the same lineweight, the drawing can look cluttered. Efficiency in professional drafting comes from using intelligent blocks that adapt to change without requiring a “Rotate” command every time.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Door Blocks
To create a professional door schedule and clear plan, follow these standards:
- Layer Standards: Separate the door geometry from the swing. Place the door panel on a medium-thick layer (e.g.,
A-DOOR) and the swing arc on a very thin, distinct layer (e.g.,A-DOOR-SWNG). This ensures the arc reads as a diagrammatic guide when plotted. - Dynamic Parameters: Instead of separate blocks for “Left” and “Right”, use Dynamic Block Parameters. Add a “Flip State” for handing and a “Stretch Action” linked to standard door widths to keep your library efficient.

Doors are the entry point. Complete your plan with:
- Window Blocks (B2) for the envelope.
- Residential Furniture to populate the rooms.
