How to Use Human Figures for Scale in Architecture + Free Blocks

Adding vegetation to a site plan is essential for scale, but complex plant blocks are the number one cause of slow, lagging AutoCAD files. Many free blocks found online are “heavy,” containing thousands of tiny lines that choke your processor. A professional CAD artist knows that efficient blocks are just as important as beautiful ones.
For professional documentation, “Symbolism” is better than “Realism.” You need blocks that look good when printed but don’t weigh down your DWG file. Managing the visual density of plants—so they don’t obscure the architectural lines—is a key skill. Using specific layers and transparency settings is the industry standard for handling foliage.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Landscape Blocks
To keep your site plans readable and fast, follow these standards:
- Transparency Management: Plants should sit in the background. Apply a Transparency of 50-60% to your Plant Layer. This allows the hardscape (pavers, walls) underneath the tree canopy to remain visible.
- Geometry Optimization: Avoid blocks with “Splines” or exploded hatches. Use simple polylines and circles. Use the
OVERKILLcommand to remove duplicate lines from complex blocks.
