An architectural section or elevation without people feels sterile and lacks scale. Without a human figure for reference, it is difficult for a client to intuitively understand the height of a ceiling or the grandeur of an entrance. Adding “entourage” is the fastest way to communicate the function and feeling of a space.
Drawing people from scratch is artistic and difficult. Using inconsistent figures can distract from your design. Professional architects use stylized, silhouette-based blocks that complement the architecture. In Phase 2 and 3 drawings, these blocks serve a vital role in verifying headroom clearances and ergonomic feasibility.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Entourage
Human figures are for context, not the focal point. Follow these rules:
- Eye Level Alignment: In a perspective or section, the horizon line should pass through the eyes of all standing figures (assuming a flat floor). This anchors the drawing and ensures the perspective is mathematically correct.
- Layer Control: Place figures on an “Entourage” layer (e.g.,
A-ANNO-PEOP). In construction documents, freeze this layer to keep technical details clear, but turn it on for presentation boards.
