Storage is the number one request from homeowners. Showing empty closets in a plan is a missed opportunity. Detailing shelving and storage systems helps sell the functionality of your design and ensures that the closet is actually buildable.
Using a standard library of storage blocks allows you to quickly populate pantries, walk-in closets, and garages with realistic shelving layouts. This validates your floor plan dimensions and ensures the client’s storage needs are met.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Storage Blocks
Standardize your depths to match industry norms:
- Plan View Depth: Use 12-inch (30cm) depth blocks for upper shelving/pantry use and 24-inch (60cm) depth blocks for wardrobe hanging rods.
- Elevation Detail: In elevation, use blocks to show the “Vertical Standards” (the tracks or side panels) to confirm adjustability and support spacing.
For custom closet standards, check California Closets Design Ideas.
Expand Your Residential Library
Fill your shelves with life:
- Clothing Blocks (B10) for wardrobes.
- Food Accessories (B7) for pantries.
