A bedroom layout is dictated almost entirely by the bed size. Using incorrect bed dimensions is the most common mistake in residential drafting. A standard Queen mattress is 60″x80″, but the actual footprint with a frame and headboard is significantly larger. If you draft with just the mattress size, you may find that doors hit the bed frame.
Accurate blocks are essential for verifying “circulation paths” around the bed. You need to ensure there is enough room to make the bed, open dresser drawers, and walk comfortably to the ensuite bathroom. Using a standard library prevents these spatial conflicts.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Bedroom Blocks
Always design with the frame in mind:
- Bed Dimensions: Use blocks that include the frame allowance (typically +2-4 inches on sides and +4-6 inches on length). A California King is longer and narrower than a standard King; mixing these up can ruin a layout.
- Clearances: Ensure you have at least 24-30 inches (60-75cm) of walking space around the sides and foot of the bed.

Bedrooms need storage. Complete your plan with:
- Closet & Storage Blocks (C12).
- Clothing Details (B10) for elevations.
