The primary challenge in designing a dining room is ensuring there is enough space for people to sit down and get up comfortably. A table might physically fit in the room, but if the “push-back” space for chairs is insufficient, the room fails functionally. Detailed AutoCAD blocks that include chairs are essential for visualizing this.
Manually drawing chairs around a table for every project is tedious. Using dynamic blocks or pre-grouped sets allows you to quickly test a 6-person rectangular table vs. an 8-person round table to see which optimizes the room’s flow and capacity.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Dining Blocks
Design for the “occupied” zone, not just the table size:
- Push-Back Clearance: You generally need a minimum of 36 inches (90cm) from the table edge to the wall to allow a guest to slide their chair back. Ideally, allow 44 inches (112cm) if people need to walk behind the seated guest. Use your blocks to verify this zone.
- Table Capacity: Allow 24 inches (60cm) of table width per person. Use blocks that are pre-sized for 6, 8, or 10 people to accurately test the room’s capacity.

- Food Accessories (B7) to dress the table.
- Lighting Blocks (E4) for the chandelier.
