Architectural diagrams need to communicate complex flows, circulation paths, and concepts simply. Drawing arrows, process boxes, and schematics from scratch often results in messy, uneven presentations. While many designers move to Illustrator for diagrams, keeping your schematic work inside AutoCAD allows you to overlay it directly on your accurate floor plans.
Effective diagrams rely on abstraction. You don’t need to draw a literal door to show entry; you need a bold arrow. Having a library of “Diagrammatic Symbols” allows you to quickly annotate a plan for sun paths, wind direction, or user circulation without spending hours drawing curved polylines.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Diagrams
Diagrams should be abstract and bold. Follow these tips:
- Polylines with Width: Unlike standard lines, use Polylines with Global Width to create thick, bold arrows that read well when printed small. This is better than using lineweights because the width scales geometrically with the drawing.
- Hatch Transparency: Use solid hatches with 70-80% transparency to define zones (e.g., “Public vs. Private”). This highlights the area without obscuring the floor plan underneath.
For more on the importance of diagramming in design, you can read about Diagrams on Wikipedia.
Expand Your Standards Library
Diagrams often explain the function of spaces. Link them with:
- General Icons (A9) for scale and orientation.
- Public Space Blocks (Category D) for circulation planning.
