A drawing without a legend is just a collection of lines. Contractors rely on the legend to understand what a specific hatch pattern means or what a symbol represents. Creating a legend from scratch for every project is tedious and prone to errors where the legend doesn’t match the plan.

Professional drawing sets use standardized legend templates. This ensures that “Concrete” always looks like concrete across all sheets. Instead of drawing lines and text manually, using AutoCAD Tables or pre-defined blocks allows for faster editing and cleaner alignment.

Don’t clutter your drawing area. Follow these layout rules:

• Paper Space Placement: Always place your general legends in Paper Space (Layout), not Model Space. This prevents the legend from changing size relative to the drawing when you change the viewport scale.
• Layer Consistency: Ensure the symbol inside the legend is on the exact same layer as the symbol in the plan. If your plan symbol is “A-WALL” but your legend symbol is “0”, they might print differently, causing confusion.
