Interior Elevations can feel mechanical and cold if they only show the millwork geometry. Adding decor items like vases, frames, and pillows helps communicate the “vibe” of the room to the client and makes the scale of the furniture easier to understand. However, creating these organic shapes in AutoCAD is difficult.
Styling an elevation isn’t just about decoration; it’s about composition. Using a library of pre-drawn decor blocks allows you to quickly balance the visual weight of your drawing, filling negative space on shelves or tabletops to create a more pleasing and professional image.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Decor Blocks
Use decor to fill negative space:
- Rule of Three: Group decor blocks (like vases or frames) in odd numbers (1, 3, 5). This is a standard design principle that applies to drafting as well.
- Masking/Wipeouts: Ensure your decor blocks have a “Mask” or Wipeout behind them. This allows you to place a pillow on a sofa without having to trim the line of the furniture behind it, keeping your drawing editable.

Decor needs context. Combine with:
- Residential Furniture for living rooms and bedrooms.
- Plants (B3) for organic texture.
