Transitioning from a floor plan to detailed interior elevations is a difficult step for many designers. Drawing cabinet sections, baseboards, and crown molding profile-by-profile is time-consuming and requires deep knowledge of construction methods. A high-quality detail drawing must communicate exactly how materials join and what the finish profile looks like.
Having a library of pre-drawn “Standard Details” allows you to focus on the design intent rather than re-inventing the wheel for every toe-kick or countertop overhang. These blocks are essential for Phase 3 (Construction Documentation) sets.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Interior Details
Details are zoomed-in views. They require different standards than floor plans:
- Scale and Detail Level: Details are typically drawn at 1:10 or 1-1/2″ = 1′-0″. At this scale, you must show “Material Hatches” (like plywood grain) and “Profile Lines”. Do not simply scale up a floor plan block; use a specific detail block with higher fidelity.
- Profile Library: Keep a library of standard molding profiles (Base, Crown, Chair Rail) as Polylines. This allows you to “Extrude” them along a path if you move to 3D, or simply snap them onto wall sections to quickly indicate trim style.
For comprehensive standards on architectural woodwork, refer to the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) Standards.

Details require precise annotations. Ensure you use:
- Dimension Styles (A3) set for large scales.
- Hatch Patterns (A1) for wood and materials.
