A closet detail isn’t helpful if it doesn’t show the clothes. Clients need to see how many shirts or dresses fit in a space to understand the capacity of the millwork. Drawing hundreds of hangers manually is tedious and repetitive, yet essential for validating the function of a Walk-In Closet.
Clothing blocks are essential for verifying vertical clearances in millwork sections. Without them, it is easy to place a shelf too low, preventing long coats from hanging straight, or spacing shelves too far apart, wasting valuable storage space.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Closet Details
Design your millwork around the items stored inside:
- Vertical Standards: Standard hanging height for long dresses/coats is 60-65 inches (150-165cm). For double-hang (shirts/pants), allow 40-42 inches (100-105cm) per rod. Use the “Long Hang” and “Short Hang” blocks to visually check these clearances in your section view.
- Shelf Spacing: Use the “Folded Shirt Stack” block to plan shelf spacing. Typically, shelves for folded clothes are spaced 12-14 inches (30-35cm) apart.
For standard closet dimensions and layouts, refer to The Container Store’s Planning Guides for inspiration.

Closets are complex systems. You need:
- Storage System Blocks (C12) for rods and shelves.
- Interior Details (A11) for cabinet construction.
