The living room is the heart of the home, but poor furniture placement can make it feel cramped or disconnected. A common mistake in drafting is drawing sofas and armchairs as simple rectangles without accounting for the armrests, back angles, or cushion depth. This often results in a layout that looks spacious on paper but feels tight in reality.
Professional interior designers use detailed blocks to verify circulation paths. You need to ensure there is enough space to walk around the coffee table and that the sofa is positioned correctly relative to the TV or fireplace. Using a standard library of furniture blocks allows you to quickly test different configurations.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Living Room Blocks
Furniture should dictate the flow of the room. Follow these spacing rules:
- Coffee Table Clearance: Always leave 14-18 inches (35-45cm) between the sofa edge and the coffee table. This is close enough to reach a drink but far enough to stretch your legs. Use your blocks to measure this gap.
- Walkways: Main traffic paths through a living room should be at least 30-36 inches (75-90cm) wide. If your furniture blocks are too large, they will encroach on these paths. Use standard-sized blocks to keep your plan realistic.
