How to Create Clear Architectural Diagrams in AutoCAD + Free Symbols
27/11/2025Guide to Placing ADA & Exit Signage in Floor Plans + (Free DWG Download)
Code compliance is not optional. Forgetting to place an Exit sign or an ADA accessibility symbol on a commercial plan can lead to permit rejections. Manually drawing these standard symbols every time is inefficient and risks inconsistency in your Life Safety Plans.
Signage blocks must be clear, legible, and distinct from the architectural geometry. They serve a legal purpose in the drawing set. Using a standard library ensures that you always use the correct symbol (e.g., the International Symbol of Accessibility) and that it is placed at the correct scale.
Technical Guide: Best Practices for Signage
Signage blocks should help the contractor, not confuse them. Follow these rules:
- Layer Management: Always place signage blocks on a dedicated layer (e.g.,
A-FLOR-SIGN). This allows you to isolate the “Signage Plan” view or freeze these symbols when printing a presentation floor plan where they might be distracting. - Annotative Behavior: Text-based signs (like “EXIT”) should be Annotative Blocks. This ensures that whether you print the plan at 1:100 or 1:50, the text size remains readable and consistent.
For specific regulations on signage symbols and placement, refer to the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

Signage is part of life safety. Ensure your plans are safe with:
- Fire Protection Symbols (E9).
- Check clearances with our Ergonomic & ADA Blocks (A10).
